Elisabetta Barili er årets modtager af Hendes Kongelige Højhed Prinsesse Margrethes Legat til videnskabelige studier ved Det Danske Institut i Rom. Legatets formål er at sætte kvalificerede personer i stand til at gennemføre videnskabelige studier ved Det Danske Institut i Rom inden for områderne klassisk arkæologi, historie, klassiske og romanske sprog.
Barili er postdoc ved Syddansk Universitet som en del af Semper Ardens Accelerate-projektet (bevilget af Carlsbergfondet) “A Rhetoric for the Empire” (PI Aglae Pizzone).
Barili arbejder med byzantinske intellektuelle i Middelalderen og deres brug af tidligere romerske forfattere, der skrev på græsk. En helt central del af dette arbejde er Barilis brug af hidtil upublicerede og ofte ukendte middelaldermanuskripter, som kun kan tilgås på Vatikanets bibliotek.
Barilis nyligt overståede Ph.d. har givet hende den nødvendige ekspertise i græsk fra den byzantinske tid til at læse disse manuskripter. Barili har udgivet sin forskning internationalt, og arbejder i øjeblikket på en monografi baseret på sin Ph.d.-afhandling. Hun har for nyligt vundet SDU’s Humaniora-pris for bedste Ph.d. for denne afhandling. Under sit ophold her på Instituttet, oplevede vi Barili som en ambitiøs, hårdtarbejdende forsker på internationalt niveau.
Instituttet ser frem til at kunne tilbyde hende endnu et ophold, når det passer ind i hendes travle hverdag.

Elisabetta Barili is this year’s recipient of Her Royal Highness Princess Margrethe’s Grant for Scholarly Studies at the Danish Academy in Rome.
The purpose of the grant is to enable qualified individuals to carry out scholarly studies at the Danish Academy in Rome within the fields of classical archaeology, history, and classical and Romance languages.
Barili is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southern Denmark, working on the Semper Ardens Accelerate project (funded by the Carlsberg Foundation) "A Rhetoric for the Empire" (PI Aglae Pizzone).
Barili studies Byzantine intellectuals of the Middle Ages and their use of earlier Roman authors writing in Greek. A central aspect of her work is the use of previously unpublished and often unknown medieval manuscripts, which can only be accessed at the Vatican Library.
Her recently completed PhD has provided her with the necessary expertise in Byzantine Greek to read these manuscripts. Barili has published her research internationally and is currently working on a monograph based on her dissertation. She recently won SDU’s (University of Southern Denmark) Humanities PhD Prize for best dissertation. During her stay at the Academy, we experienced Barili as an ambitious, hard-working scholar of international calibre.
The Academy looks forward to welcoming her back for another stay when her busy schedule allows.

Elisabetta Barili è la vincitrice di quest’anno della Borsa di Studio di Sua Altezza Reale la Principessa Margrethe per studi scientifici presso l’Accademia di Danimarca a Roma.
Scopo della borsa è quello di permettere a persone qualificate di svolgere studi scientifici presso l’Accademia di Danimarca a Roma nei campi dell’archeologia classica, della storia, e delle lingue classiche e romanze.
Barili è ricercatrice post-doc presso la University of Southern Denmark per il progetto "A Rhetoric for the Empire" (responsabile scientifica: Aglae Pizzone) nell’ambito del programma Semper Ardens Accelerate (finanziato dalla Fondazione Carlsberg). Gli studi di Barili riguardano gli intellettuali bizantini del Medioevo e il loro uso di autori in lingua greca di età romana. Un aspetto centrale del suo lavoro è l’utilizzo di manoscritti medievali inediti e spesso sconosciuti, consultabili solo presso la Biblioteca Vaticana.
Il dottorato di ricerca recentemente concluso le ha fornito la necessaria competenza per poter leggere i manoscritti nel greco bizantino. Barili ha pubblicato i risultati delle sue ricerche a livello internazionale e sta attualmente lavorando a una monografia basata sulla sua tesi. Ha recentemente ricevuto il Premio per la Miglior Tesi di Dottorato in ambito umanistico della University of Southern Denmark. Durante il suo soggiorno presso l’Istituto, Barili si è distinta come determinata e laboriosa studiosa di calibro internazionale.
L’Istituto attende con piacere di poterla accogliere nuovamente per un altro soggiorno, quando i suoi impegni lo permetteranno.
