2026Liesel CharlotteBurischvisual artsDuring my stay at the Danish Institute in Rome, I look forward to continuing my artistic research into separatist gathering points and rituals for women. In Rome, I will focus on the Lex Oppia and the speech by Hortensia 100 years later. Both were reactions to lost wars, whereby women's wealth was to be confiscated to restore the state's balance of power. In both cases, the already minimal rights of widows and daughters were further restricted, triggering an anger that led to backlashes—most prominently when Hortensia became the first woman ever to speak in the Forum Romanum. My stay will give me the opportunity to immerse myself in history, seek out key nodes and interview activist organisations. The research is part of a larger project in which I wish to examine the history of separatist spaces and demonstrations, and their necessity today. 
2026JonasGerlingsscience Machiavelli and Kant's analyses of Rome's political history

In the history of political thought, Machiavelli (1469–1527) and Kant (1724–1804) are traditionally considered to be theoretical opposites: Machiavelli's The Prince is seen as providing a realistic picture of human egoism, whereas Kant is seen as painting an idealistic picture of the moral motives of human action. Although Kant's references to Machiavelli are virtually absent from his works, I have, together with my colleague Kaarlo Havu, identified numerous passages in Kant's notes that paraphrase Machiavelli's works and provide a different picture of the relationship between the two thinkers. Building on these notes, during my stay in Rome I intend to reassess the relationship between Machiavelli and Kant by examining their analyses of Roman history. I will make use of Rome's libraries and present our conclusions at a conference in Florence. The final analysis will be published as a research article.

My project is an ethnobotanical study examining the Non-Catholic Cemetery in Rome as an urban biocultural landscape where biodiversity, plant use and rituals intertwine. During my stay at the Danish Institute in Rome, I will analyse the cemetery's botanical diversity and its function as a refuge for urban biodiversity, as well as how plant selection and vegetation form part of religious rituals, mourning practices and cultural perceptions. Through a combination of plant species recording and investigations into the use of the cemetery, the project sheds light on the interplay between nature and culture in urban green spaces.
2026Michael DavidHopemusician Rome has talent: Music, oratory and space from antiquity to the present day

This artistic research project combines my dual fascinations with music
as a competition or “game” and the historical development of dynamics between
performer and audience, as well as social rituals, expectations and hierarchies. I
specifically investigating how these are altered by the physical and formal space. In addition to the
obvious modern forms of artistic competition found in TV shows like The
Voice, Eurovision, Danmark har talent etc., one might perhaps claim that the most potent
an example of such a synthesis can be found in the music, poetry and competitions of
the art of rhetoric in ancient Rome.
The outcome of this artistic research will be a series of solo performances,
where I take on a dual role as composer and performer. The performance will
self-referentially investigate how music, words and space psychologically manipulate
audience through the use of specific techniques, forms, gimmicks and performative
modes of expression. Through a synthesis of ancient Roman and modern competitions,
I perform as multiple characters, each expressing different
manipulation strategies inspired by ancient sites, competitions, texts, etc.
I am particularly interested in reconceptualising the art of speech as music – that
explore how both words and sound manipulate the audience into specific states, and
how this quality has been utilised throughout history by both artists and
rhetoricians. This study will specifically address the concept of space as a
rhetorical tool – not just in relation to stage and seating arrangements, proportions and
distances, but also in relation to ornaments and symbols as affective amplifiers of
live performances.
The project uncovers analogies between ancient and modern symbols of
artistic performance. This will contribute to a better understanding of how the contemporary
symbols of success work, and how an uncovering of these can lead us to pose
questioning our preconceptions about what is or isn't
valuable. The ultimate goal of such an approach is to create less binary ways to
to create and value music and art.
2026PernilleMerchantLiteratureDuring my stay I will be working on a novel about the Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. The text will take as its starting point historical records, sensory experiences of the remnants of Baroque Rome, and a linguistic exploration of the dramatic and mystical world of Gentileschi's paintings. My interest in Gentileschi's paintings and life (or the porous interface between the two) stems from the mixture of devil-may-care attitude, vulnerability and anger that still seems to shine out at us here nearly 400 years after her death. Stylistically, I will attempt to write my way towards a form of Baroque novel that, in its structure and language, plays with the mosaic and spectacular aesthetics of the Baroque; an aesthetic that glimmers and dazzles, mirrors and distorts.

Based on studies of historical buildings in Rome, we wish to develop new expressions where the ornament forms an active, integrated element in the architecture. Our professional backgrounds and the different traditions in which we are anchored form an exciting starting point for our joint work with ornamentation. As a spatial designer, Kamma Rosa Schytte's practice is characterised by the Danish traditions within architecture and design; minimalism, functionality, and high material quality. In contrast to Liv Marie Rømer's discipline, textile design, where ornamentation is entirely central to working with pattern, repetition, and colour. Our interdisciplinary collaboration has raised one particular question; How can devices such as textile, colour, and repetition – or the ornament – be used as an integrated and load-bearing part of the architectural expression in a contemporary context? How can ornamentation form a sensory and functional part of the space – rather than as an addition.

2026StefanKrusevisual artsIn my project, I am investigating how the Renaissance invention of linear and vertical perspective laid the foundation for a visual and power-based order, where overview and control became central. This tradition is continued today in surveillance technologies such as drones and sensors over the Mediterranean, where the same 'gaze' is used to regulate movements and borders. A stay in Rome gives me the opportunity to work directly with the early paintings and architectural spaces where this vision took shape, and connect them with the current technological development manifesting itself over the Mediterranean and at the European borders.

In consultation with curator Paola Paleari, I will contact cultural figures in Rome and carry out artistic research based at the Foro Italico. exploring themes such as power, control, communities and freedom.

The residency at the Danish Institute in Rome provides the framework for the development of a new series of larger textile works. The project stems from an artistic investigation of Catholicism, heritage, and cultural imprints, taking its starting point in my Catholic and Italian roots. In Rome, I will investigate how religious iconography, ritual, and materiality have historically shaped visual expressions. My paternal grandmother originates from Rome and has been a central narrative in my family. On my mother's side, Catholicism has also played a major role. The residency marks a significant developmental step in my practice, where for the first time I am working so directly with history, religiosity, and personal history. It provides the opportunity to work in dialogue with the historical and architectural context that Catholicism and the Renaissance represent. Rome functions not merely as a research destination, but as a workspace where personal history meets a concrete cultural-historical reality.
2026ClaraFlorkevisual artsDuring our stay at the institute, we will create a series of performances in Rome's open-air squares. In a stumbling Tableau Vivant, the present moment is stretched and opened up. In Rome's historic squares, we will investigate the infra-ordinary, meaning movements that are so massively present that one stops noticing them. The infra-ordinary tells of underlying social structures and historical extensions. With the performances, we will investigate the potential of stopping movement and try to find flexibility in the seemingly fixed. The performances are made possible through collaboration, and with them we wish to create social experiences of attentiveness and tenderness. Among other things, the performances will be documented using analogue photography, which we will develop in the institute's photo laboratory.
2026PeterGehlshøjscienceThe purpose of my research stay at the Danish Institute in Rome: I want to revisit my academic network, particularly at Sapienza Università di Roma, explore opportunities for research collaborations as part of a future postdoctoral project, and work on rewriting parts of my PhD thesis for a book publication. A central focus is the material on the connections between Danish and Italian musical drama in the 18th century, which I worked on during my stay in Rome in 2024. Visiting Italian ensembles and composers, among others Giuseppe Sarti (1729-1802), left a lasting mark on Danish musical theatre, and Danish artists and audiences reacted with both admiration and resistance to the new, foreign currents.

The work is to be created via sonic improvisations on architectural and organic forms using textual and vocal material.
2026Connor WardMcLeanmusicianIn this project I am investigating the relationship between urban life, history, imagination and culture through the creation of a modular composition for Neko3 and Jonathan Swensen. I will work with found video and sounds which I collect during this residency at the Danish Institute in Rome, and compose instrumental music that both complements and accompanies this material. Out of the work in Rome I will shape scenes from an imaginary city, which can be arranged to tell a story or guide the listener through this world. This practice is inspired by the world-building in Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, numerous video games and historical maps.

My project Breath Icons explores the breath as a universal image of life, vulnerability and interconnectedness. I wish to create a dialogue between the imagery of the icon tradition and the rhythm of the breath – between the sacred and the sensuous. Where classical icons open towards the divine through form, colour and light, I investigate how the breath can function as a contemporary icon: a living image carried by the body itself. I work with painting, song, photography and video, where the rhythm of the breath and the movement of the body are recorded as traces of life – a physical and spiritual resonance. The audience is invited to step into the works as into a quiet space of presence and reflection, where body, faith and time meet, and where the personal and the universal can mirror one another.

Inspired by notation systems, the drawings will function as investigations into how spatial complexity and ambiguity can be translated and interpreted. Alongside this, I will study the cultural and political significance of the Baroque and seek to understand the style from a media-theoretical perspective. My starting point will be works by Bernini and Borromini.

In my thesis, I understand the Roman district of EUR as 'Difficult Heritage' – cultural heritage associated with violence and oppression. I am investigating how the area's fascist architecture has been managed from 1950 to the present day, and how site-specific art and curatorial strategies have sought to challenge official narratives and create new ones. What potentials and limitations do such interventions hold, and what can we learn from them? The project serves as a starting point for understanding the negotiation of difficult heritage in Denmark through a critical analysis of the West India Warehouse (Vestindisk Pakhus). The stay includes archival studies at the Archivio Centrale dello Stato, ethnographic fieldwork in EUR, and interviews with curators at MAXXI.

Historically, the Italian labour market has been strongly segmented by both age and gender. The employment rate has traditionally been low and unemployment high among women and young people, whereas working-age men have been employed to a far greater extent. This structure can be attributed, among other things, to religious and cultural orientation patterns, institutionalised through state and labour market schemes designed to ensure that male heads of household were in stable, full-time employment. The purpose of the stay is – in a comparison with Danish conditions – to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural orientations, policies, institutions and processes that have a segmenting effect on the Italian labour market.
2026MoritzSchrammscience Albert Speer's landscape architecture and the Italian influences

During my stay, I intend to continue working on my forthcoming book on Albert Speer's landscape and garden architecture during the so-called Third Reich. My stay in Rome is intended to help me place his plans in a broader historical and international context, not least with regard to Italian fascism and its view of nature and landscapes. While it is known in research that large parts of Speer's monumental architecture were influenced by his repeated travels to Italy and Rome during the 1930s, a potential influence on his garden and landscape architecture has not yet been investigated. During my stay, I will follow in Speer's footsteps in Rome and attempt to map any influences on his garden and landscape architecture.
2026MarinaVidasscience Atypical bodies in gothic illuminations: marginality, healing, punishment and the apotropaic power of images

My research project investigates medieval illuminated manuscripts in a range of collections in Rome (primarily the Vatican Library) depicting individuals with atypical bodies (including amputees, blind or paralysed persons, and dwarves). The aim of the study is to clarify how corporeality, marginality and otherness were constructed in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century illuminations through specific visual strategies. It also analyses the placement within the manuscripts of the aforementioned images, as well as the relationship between image and text. There is some indication – though this requires further investigation – that such images are often placed in scenes of almsgiving or miraculous healings, or where a disability appears as a divine punishment or an incentive to Christian virtue and faith. The study will also focus on the possible apotropaic function of the figures, and will discuss the extent to which contemporary associations linked to atypical bodies – ugliness, impurity, corruption – may have created notions that the images were endowed with a protective power in relation to both the manuscript and its owner. Through an analysis of the way in which visual culture both reflected and shaped medieval conceptions of sin, charity, healing and divine power, the research project will seek to shed new light on the construction of non-normative bodies in the Middle Ages.

The purpose of the residency is to investigate how food production and distribution have been visualised in Rome from antiquity to the present day. I will study mosaics in Ostia Antica and Roman villas, as well as Cosmatesque floors and opus sectile, where economy and resources are embedded in ornamentation. At the same time, I will examine contemporary logistics hubs and contemporary image forms, and put these into dialogue with my own work in marquetry and acrylic glass mosaics.

Every object, every journey and every photograph carries traces of those who have lived before us. Drawing on research and fiction, I will use migration as an overarching perspective to map my Italian family history in the encounter with Rome and my roots. My great-grandfather Ottoli Guiseppe Zabelo left Messina at the age of 16. He travelled as a journeyman up through Europe, ending up in Denmark in 1913. He never spoke about his Italian heritage and never returned to his homeland. I want to use my great-grandfather's story as a lens to understand larger patterns of migration, identity and cultural exchange.
2026Hedvig TygstrupGreiffenbergvisual artsDuring my stay, through research, museum visits and practical studio experiments, I will work my way into a project based on the wax tablets that were used for everyday writing in ancient Rome: tabula cerata. In both function and materiality, the tablets act as a prism for a new series of sculptural works which, through the casting and manipulation of heated wax, connect and negotiate the space where sculpture, drawing and language meet.

My project during my residency at the Danish Institute consists of archive- and literature-based research starting from the year 1959, when the Italian art critic, art historian and feminist Carla Lonzi and the French-Caribbean psychiatrist and political thinker Frantz Fanon both arrived in Rome. The focus is on the genealogical relation between Lonzi's formulations of a colonisation of women qua sexually oppressed and Fanon's writings on colonisation, specifically overlaps in Lonzi's and Fanon's use of poetry as a practice of conscientisation. In addition to academic articles, the communication work will consist of translating and introducing Lonzi's first feminist essays into Danish.
2026ClausAndersenscience Identity and difference in the Jesuit metaphysics lectures in Rome and Naples

During the stay I will work on a project in the history of philosophy concerning the so-called “formalist” tradition in late medieval and Renaissance metaphysics. This tradition focuses on the concepts of identity and difference – metaphysical treatises on these concepts are the special characteristic of this tradition. I will specifically focus on discussions of identity and difference in the philosophy teaching of the Jesuits in Rome and Naples in the 16th and 17th centuries, because their discussions can be seen as a late continuation of the formalist tradition. I will examine lecture manuscripts and printed books which are today kept in various libraries in Rome and Naples. I am particularly interested in finding out whether there are differences in content in the material from Rome and Naples. The examined material is to be treated in a chapter in a new book.

During my stay at the Institute, I am preparing the publication of an anthology of texts, Sputiamo su Hegel (1970), authored by the Italian critic Carla Lonzi and the separatist feminist collective Rivolta Femminile – central figures in the earliest wave of feminist self-organisation in 1960s Italy, yet largely unknown in Danish contexts. In the spirit of Lonzi and Rivolta Femminile, the publication will be a collective effort, undertaken by the Copenhagen text collective Fredag Aften. I am myself translating a number of the core texts and preparing the source text for the entire anthology based on the original typescripts, looked after by the Fondazione Basso and the feminist Biblio Archivia in Trastevere.

In Rome, everything appears ploughed together and reused, as a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk, out of time. I have two different artists who are going to help me exist in this particular state of chaos: Piranesi and de Chirico. A stay in Rome gives me the opportunity to research Piranesi's complete graphic corpus of work. His prison fantasies are, after all, fantastic, but I am going to look more closely at his design works. Here it goes completely wild with borrowings from all cultures! de Chirico places himself in this centre of simultaneity and quotes and fantasises, and anticipates in his works, which are accessible in, amongst other places, his home on Piazza di Spagna. Metaphysical painting, “always” with a resonance backwards and forwards.
2026AnetteHighlundvisual arts The Memory of the Painting

I am interested in painting as memory. On the one hand: the painting's memory of layers of paint and of moments where it has suddenly changed character. On the other hand: my own memory of colours, nature, architecture and structures, which I consciously or unconsciously allow to emerge in my works. In my paintings, I am concerned with being able to see deep down into the layers of colour: a green on top of a yellow, which is painted over with a pink, for example. In this way, colours emerge that could only have arisen right there and in that way. I build up the paintings as if the colour fields were lumps of material or stacked blocks. They are balanced against each other. The picture acquires a precise tension and becomes a field in which one can become immersed. It conceals something; it has an inner value because it is accumulated sensation. In Rome, memory is visible and tactile, but also invisible, hidden. That is the analogy to painting that I am fascinated by. I want to study the clashes between building materials, ornamentations, techniques and styles of different eras, where creative reuse is the keyword. I will draw, photograph and paint clashes of times and materialities, stackings of limestone, marble and sandstone. I will record how grass, other plants, soil and human footpaths meet the archaeological layers in the excavations, where nature and ongoing weathering play a part. I will study peeling paint and overpaintings and get close to surfaces where I can see down into and into their layers of memory. And I will take sensations, recordings and sketches home to the studio, where I will work on a series of medium-format non-figurative paintings.
2026Clara MarieWestergaardscienceThe Arabic reception of Aristotle's Poetics

During this stay, I will put the finishing touches to my monograph on the treatment and further development of Aristotle's short literary-theoretical treatise, the Poetics, by the philosophers of the Arab Middle Ages. Like many other texts by Greek philosophers, this work was translated into Arabic, from which it was studied and commented upon. The monograph deals with these commentaries and texts on Aristotelian poetics by the philosophers Al-Farabi, Avicenna, and Averroes and is based on my PhD thesis submitted to Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, in June 2024.
2026Sara VejrupJørgensenscienceBetween public and private: Architecture, space and social identity in Pompeii – The culture of bathing in the praedia of Julia Felix

During the stay, I will work on my thesis, in which I am investigating the bathing complex in the Praedia Iuliae Felicis in Pompeii, focusing on its architecture, urbanism, and socio-historical significance. The bath represents a borderline case between public and private baths and thus provides a unique opportunity to analyse how the Romans understood and practised the boundaries between the private and the public.

A central dimension of the project is Julia Felix’s ownership, documented through an inscription which highlights her as an active female agent in Pompeii's urban life and raises questions about women's agency and property rights in Roman society.
2026MadsDueotherI am going to dive into the cultural and artistic underground in Rome.

When you scratch beneath the antique facade, you encounter a very special underground environment where contemporary art, solidarity and social work are united. The environment unfolds, among other places, around the city's centri sociali (social centres) and the many Arci institutions. Centri sociali are squatted buildings and areas that are organised autonomously. Arci is a state-subsidised network of cultural centres and associations.

On different premises, both forms of organisation manage to give contemporary art’s growth layer access to stages and exhibition spaces - in a city that is largely shaped by past culture. At the same time, the institutions form a network of focal points for countercultures and for the city’s eccentric figures. For Tom, Dick and Harry. And not least for the city’s less well-off and vulnerable citizens, who in these cultural institutions gain access to art and culture that is otherwise inaccessible to them in the large, fine Roman art institutions.

I want to find out how they do it. And import my findings.
2026Anders TerkelTroelsenscienceReading the City: On Urban Experience and Formal Understanding

Following on from a project supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation on »The City on Edge: Urbanistic Perspectives on the Skyscraper«, it is my intention to write a book on urban analysis on a more general level. Part of the material was developed in the previous context, but the book is to introduce various approaches to the field, while constantly exemplifying them through concrete analyses. However, it is crucial that the chosen »cases« challenge conventional analytical methods and procedures. This is particularly true of aesthetic aspects that draw on insights from perceptual psychology, structuralism (semiotics) and phenomenology.
The applied-for stay thus has two purposes:
 
Urban observations in Rome – including in particular EUR – as well as other selected Italian cities
Literature search for Italian specialist literature regarding the subject
 
Parts of the »field studies« will presumably examine more traditional cities. In Rome, the focus will be on new or newer initiatives within the existing urban structure. However, special attention is intended for EUR, which presents a range of interpretations of Roman architectural works.
The second purpose – literature searching – should not be regarded as something secondary. In Denmark, it is more than difficult to find your way around recent foreign specialised literature, apart from that in English.

My work at the institute is based on an exhibition project that places the historical print tradition of Ex Libris within a contemporary art context. My interest in this project revolves around the relationship between Ex Libris and the nuclear family as an institution, as well as how wealth, property and blood relation are portrayed in Ex Libris as markers of the family's value and authenticity. Heritage and bloodlines hold a central place in Roman history and from here have become fundamental to a shared European identity. I want to address how a dissolution of Ex Libris, as a print and as an object, can dismantle a historical as well as contemporary family ideal, where the accumulation of wealth, consumerism and heritage are centralised in heteronormative, capitalist structures.
2026Viktoria BergvallHansenarchitectureCommunity in ancient tenement blocks

I want to investigate the “Insula dell'Ara Coeli”, which is the only surviving ruin of an insula in Rome, the apartment complexes of antiquity. The project deals with a part of Roman architectural history that was not intended for the elite. On the contrary, it was in this type of housing that the majority of Romans lived. I want to delve into the housing typology's spaces for community and map the social patterns within the ruin. The investigation will take its starting point in available sources and my own recordings through sketching, photography and mapping. Based on my mappings, I will reconstruct the ruin through drawing and draw comparisons with the place of community in more contemporary projects, in order to connect these experiences across time and place.
2026Sigrid ÖsterlundTranescienceMy project is about how the traditional art-historical work description can be rethought as a situated and relational writing method, where the artwork does not appear as a neutral object, but emerges in the encounter between body, place and context. At the Danish Institute in Rome, I will immerse myself in past archaeological reports and travel diaries to see how observation, documentation and personal experiences were woven together in the texts. Taking these investigations as a starting point, I will explore a writing method that works consciously with the author's voice and situated gaze, and that allows the text to arise in the very encounter with the work. During my stay in Rome, I will test this approach on sculptures by the Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso.

This is a project that, through socially engaging and interdisciplinary artistic methods, seeks to map out the legal and economic challenges faced by producers of sour beer, in order to draw a parallel between their working conditions and the manufacture of the beer, and the socio-economic conditions that comparably play out within the art sector. This is research that I have previously presented as part of the cartography infrastructure "eavatea" at M HKA and Kunsthal Gent in Belgium.

With a focus on the aesthetic and historical connections between the Italian Situationists and the Danish artist Asger Jorn, the anti-mapping drawings of Rome by the 18th-century artist and architect Piranesi, and the non-industrial fermentation methods used in the wine regions (Lazio, Abruzzo, etc.) in between, I wish to add new relevant contextual dimensions to the project. Following the residency, my research will culminate in a series of performance lectures organised in collaboration with the Jubilee Platform for Artistic Research in Brussels in 2026.

During the stay, the many depictions of Mary found in Rome are studied, and comparative studies are made with the postures and positions of older goddesses.

My project consists of writing an essayistic chapter on the Roman night for an upcoming book on the cultural history of the night, to be published by Forlaget Multivers in 2027-2028. The book moves within the tension field between personal experience, philosophy, literature and art, and the chapter on Rome will examine how the night is sensed and symbolised right here – in the city's spaces, ruins and works. I will incorporate classical sources such as Goethe, Byron and H.C. Andersen as well as visual artists such as Eckersberg and Thorvaldsen, whose relief figure Night (1815) constitutes a central figure in the project. The stay at the Danish Institute in Rome is intended to function as an intensive writing and reflection period, where access to both the nocturnal landscape and local libraries will anchor the chapter in concrete experience and cultural-historical immersion.

I am a flautist with postgraduate training in historical flute (traverso). The purpose of my stay at the Danish Institute is to have the opportunity for an intensive course of study with the Italian traverso player Manuel Granatiero.
As educational opportunities in Denmark are extremely limited, I am deeply grateful for having been given the peace of mind and the physical framework that allow for a month of tuition. I look forward to developing my technical and artistic skills on my instrument.

As part of my postdoc project "Early Modern rituals of power and the construction of the colonial Other," I'm engaging with different aspects of Roman festival culture and its influence in Early Modern Europe. My research in Rome will be dedicated to three core aspects:

1) Contemporary sources and monuments in relation to the reinvention of the antique triumph, as exemplified by the triumphal entry of Emperor Charles V in 1536;

2) the documentation and urban settings of baroque spectacles like those in honour of Christina of Sweden in 1656 or Bernini's ephemeral decorations mounted on the Spanish steps to celebrate the birth of the French crown prince in 1662, and

3) the ceremonial of the Early Modern papal court with its different settings and material culture.
2026KatinkaLangdahl-Frederiksenscience Sensuality and corporality: Philip Neri as a reformer in 16th-century Rome

My project – more specifically my thesis in church history at the Faculty of Theology – focuses on the ”Reformer of Rome” Philip Neri, who founded the Oratorians, who played a central role in the Catholic Reformation. The Oratorians stood out in particular for their pastoral work, which focused on the cure of souls, the laity and the sacraments, especially confession and the Eucharist. In my project, I wish to investigate how the reformation of the Church to which the Oratorians contributed cultivated the sensory and the corporeal as part of the religious experience and ecclesiastical practice.

Why Matter Matters investigates how waste can be understood as an architectural resource rather than a residual product. At a time when each European produces an average of five tonnes of waste a year, waste becomes a mirror of the cultural, political, economic and ecological systems of which we are a part. The project explores how architecture can make visible and transform the material flows of waste and open up new understandings of value, materiality and temporality, not only among humans, but also in interplay with actors such as animals, plants and microorganisms that form part of the waste cycle.

Rome provides an ideal context, as the city has been shaped in a distinctive way by its waste throughout history. From Monte Testaccio, the man-made hill of amphora shards, to the use of spolia in architecture, to contemporary challenges such as the consequences of the Malagrotta landfill, waste in the urban landscape and the tourism industry. Whereas waste in cities like Copenhagen is often hidden, in Rome it is a visible part of the city's fabric and culture. At the same time, the two cities are linked through the circulation of waste, as large amounts of Italian waste are exported for incineration in Denmark. Through fieldwork and interviews in Rome, we will map the visible and hidden networks of waste. The stay in Rome constitutes the first part of our thesis project, an introductory phase of research and method development that will later culminate in some form of architectural design proposal, the character and form of which are still open.
