Director Mikkel Harder Munck-Hansen

He has 30 years of management experience as a manager, director and board leader in small, medium and large cultural institutions. His primary area is performing arts and he has performed in, directed and written productions in Denmark and abroad since leaving The London Academy of Music and Dramatic art in 1992.

Librarian and editor Maria Adelaide Zocchi

Graduated with a Master's degree in Danish.

Since 2004, she has been the Academy's librarian and co-editor of the journal Analecta Romana Instituti Danici and the accompanying series Analecta Romana Instituti Danici-Supplementum. She also takes on other tasks, such as translations, Italian texts, and responsibilities related to cultural events and projects.

Marianne has studied literature at the University of Copenhagen, is a trained librarian, and has worked for many years in the Map and Image Department at the Royal Library in Copenhagen. She has also worked as a textile designer and was the director of the Scandinavian Association in Rome from 1994 to 1997. She is responsible for the Academy's art collection.

Cassandra Geyti and Sofie Kristiansen

Cassandra and Sofie are interns at the Academy in the spring of 2026. They study comparative literature and classical philology respectively and help with a variety of tasks.

FAQ

Arrival

The Danish Academy is situated in the park Villa Borghese close to Piazza del Popolo.

Metro A (Battistini) runs from Stazione Termini to Stazione Flaminio.

There is a ten minute walk through the park from Stazione Flaminio to the Academy.

For fellows

Note that a fixed arrival date (and departure date) is set for fellows each month, which will be communicated via email. On the first working day after the arrival date, there will be a tour of the building, coffee with the entire group and the office staff, and an introduction to the library. In the evening, the Academy will host a dinner in the fellows' kitchen.

For everyone

The Academy is open from monday to friday from 9-17. As a general rule, arrival outside of opening hours is not possible.

Upon arrival, you will be shown to your room and given your keys and wifi log-in.

 

Location

The Academy is situated in a central location, at the edge of the Villa Borghese park, near Piazza del Popolo.

The Academy is within walking distance of many major tourist attractions, including Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum and Forum Romanum.

The nearest metro station is Flaminio. Trams 2 (Piazzale Flaminio), 3 and 19 (Piazza Thorvaldsen) and buses 160,490 also run close to us,495,590,61 (Del Fiocco/Valle Giulia stop).

You can find countless restaurants, cafés and shops in the local area.

Admission

Calls for longer stays, with or without a fellowship, are announced twice a year, in January and August, via the Academy's homepage and social media. Keep an eye on the exact deadline dates in February and September on our homepage and social media.

Responses to applications can be expected after approximately 2 months.

Short stay

It is possible to apply for a short stay, typically 1-2 weeks, via the Academy's homepage.

Summer course

The Academy hosts a summer course for university students every July.

What level is the course?

The course is intended for both bachelor’s and master’s students, with the requirement that you have completed at least your first year of study.

Is there a curriculum?

Yes, the reading material is 1000 pages and will be organized and selected by the lecturer.

Can I get ECTS points for the course?

Yes, the course is structured according to the standard norms regarding curriculum, number of hours, and teaching, etc., that typically apply to university courses worth 10 ECTS credits. However, you can also choose 7.5 ECTS credits if this fits better with your study plan. Please note, however, that it is always the responsibility of the individual student to have the course approved for ECTS credit by their university.

Is there an exam?

Yes, the course is concluded with an oral exam, that is based on the reading material and the lessons.

What is the price?

The course has a base price of DKK 4,000 and includes accommodation, entrance to attractions, transportation around Rome, and two dinners. There is a surcharge of DKK 1,000 for a single room and an additional charge of DKK 500 per night for extra overnight stays.

Registration

Registration takes place via the Academy’s homepage. The deadline for this year’s summer course was March 20th at 23:59.

 

Practical information about the Academy

The building contains the following rooms for use by fellows: seven single rooms, one double room, and two smaller two-bedroom apartments. In one of these apartments, it is possible to bring children.

The rooms are furnished with a bed, a desk with a chair, an armchair, and are equipped with a shower and toilet. The Academy provides bed linens and towels, which will be washed by the staff. A mattress topper can be requested by contacting the office. All rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi via a hotspot, heating/cooling system, a safe, and a hairdryer.

The common area consists of a fellows' kitchen, a lounge, and a terrace.

Guests

As a fellow, you can apply to have a companion join you during your stay. Children can accompany you free of charge.

Rent for companions

Per day 380 kr. per person

 

For stays in the apartment, the fellow pays the full price, while the companion (or second fellow) pays half price.

As a fellow, you can also have a guest stay in your room for a maximum of one week.

Per day 540 kr. per person

Departure

On weekdays, the room must be vacated by 9 AM at the latest to allow for cleaning.

Remember to leave the keys on the desk and to leave the room in the same tidy condition as when you arrived. Also, make sure to empty your fridge and food cupboard.

Luggage can be stored in the wardrobe until departure, where there is also a restroom available.
