Foreign academies constitute a unique peculiarity of the city and represent an unrivalled cultural resource: an international network that continues to fuel exchanges, disciplinary cross-pollination and new readings of the urban space.
The Grand Tour originated between the 17th and 18th centuries as an educational journey undertaken by the artistic and intellectual community that arrived in Rome to engage with the city as a laboratory of knowledge. This tradition has progressively institutionalised itself through the presence in Rome of foreign academies, places of residence and research that still today welcome, every year, figures from various countries.
