The Prelude and Fugue in A minor is one of Bach's most monumental organ works, characterised by rhythmic power and contrapuntal complexity. Liszt transforms this masterpiece into a virtuoso test for the piano, retaining the original grandeur of the organ version but adapting it to the sound of the 19th century.
Known for his neoclassical style and eclectic approach, Poulenc combines humour and touches of melancholy in these piano pieces. The eight nocturnes explore different moods, from moments of heartfelt reflection to more lively passages with clear melodies and subtle harmonies. The Presto in B flat major, on the other hand, is a short but brilliant work that shows Poulenc's more carefree and elegant side. Mélancolie reflects its title with a contemplative character and a stronger emotional depth that approaches the dramatic.
Sonata No. 3 is one of Chopin's most complex and mature piano works. Written in 1844, it represents the highest embodiment of the sonata form in his output. It combines virtuosity, melodic elegance and deep emotional expressiveness. The piano part is monumental, alternating between passages of great energy and more intimate moments before culminating in a lively and overwhelming finale.
