A final farewell

It is with great sadness that we have received the news that Karen Ascani has passed away.

Karen made an indefatigable contribution to the development of the institute over more than three decades—the 70s, 80s, 90s, and into the early 00s—representing a significant chapter in the institute's history. Many of the initiatives, projects, and values that still characterise the institute bear the marks of Karen’s commitment and diligence. Thank you for everything, Karen! The institute sends its warmest thoughts to her family and loved ones. The funeral will take place at the Cathedral, Piazza Domenico Bastianini, Tuscania (VT) on Tuesday 11 August at 11:00.

New ARID Supplementum publication

Italian Paintings Featuring Gold at the National Gallery of Denmark: Reflection, Devotion, Experience (c. 1320 – c. 1450)

This book examines the National Gallery of Denmark’s principal holdings of pre-Renaissance and early Renaissance Italian painting, focusing on eleven gold-ground panels from Tuscany dating from c. 1320 to c. 1450. The paintings are considered in relation to their known or possible ecclesiastical and domestic contexts, exploring how gold grounds, narrative elements, colour, frames, light, and location could shape the experience of medieval and Renaissance beholders. Questions of provenance, attribution, reconstruction, and devotional use are treated with due attention to the fragmentary condition and complex histories of many of the works. Informed by close visual analysis, contemporary religious thought, and documentary and historical sources, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of these panels both as devotional images and as late medieval and early Renaissance Italian paintings in a modern museum collection.

New music literature collection

In 2025, the department received a prestigious and generous gift in the form of an extensive collection of music literature. Musicologist John Bergsagel has donated his large and exceptionally versatile book collection to the department, which will now become part of the departmental library.

The collection contains a wide selection of music literature, including song and sheet music catalogues, works on music theory, musical aesthetics and music history, as well as specialised studies in both early and later European music. The material reflects a lifetime of research, teaching and engagement in the world of music and constitutes a valuable resource for the institute's researchers, fellows and guests.

John Bergsagel is an internationally recognised musicologist and professor emeritus at the University of Copenhagen. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the research of early music and has been of great importance to the study of music history. With this donation, his academic legacy is carried forward in an environment where music, art and humanistic research meet.

The Institute is very grateful for this gift, which strengthens the library's collections.
